A Kolkata based vegan artist has put together a calendar that will give you something to think about every month.
Manmohan Malani from Kolkata, an artist by profession turned vegan almost 2 years ago. He met two juniors from his alma matter on two separate occasions and they both had turned vegan. “I made fun of them for choosing to eat and live this way,” he says. When one of them quoted a well-known adage in the vegan circles, ‘Not your mom, not your milk’, that stirred his thinking. “I couldn’t get it out of my head and I started thinking about how in school textbooks we so easily accept ‘cows give us milk’,” says Malani. Within ten days he was fully vegan and hasn’t looked back since.
Being a talented artist, he always wanted to use his art to convey something and when he turned vegan he knew what he had to do.
The 2022 Veganning Calendar is his way of planting that vegan seed.
“The actual message we try to convey as vegans might not be not appealing to everyone,” he says, “but I had to find a way to cut across all of that and make it acceptable for all ages.” The calendar features beautifully illustrated images with a short punch line.
“The first month has the tag line ‘Remember why you started’,” says Malani. “When I see someone eating ice cream I just have to think of why I decided to go vegan and that is why I included the punch line in the first month itself,” he adds. Every month has a different theme that ranges from animal ethics in food, fashion and beauty and he even has an illustration about zoos.
So far Malani has sold over 80 calendars and they have even been sent to the USA by some eager customers to give as gifts. Malani says “A vegan doctor had kept last year’s calendar in her clinic for everyone to see and she came back to me and said so many people asked her for more information about veganism.”
The calendar is printed to order and 50% of the proceeds are being donated to FIAPO. Malani is selling the calendar for ₹370 including shipping all over India.
This calendar is sure to get those eyeballs that is much needed for the vegan movement.
